Students remain a part of The Hester Hornbrook Academy family even once classes are complete. Our Alumni Program supports past students as they continue their journey into further education or employment. Not only does it keep students connected to the Academy, it eases young people into the transition from study at our school to further education or the workforce. Our Alumni worker is here to help you navigate the next steps after VCAL.

As a student is investigating options for life after HHA, the alumni worker discusses potential needs of the young person with the classroom youth worker and educator as well as our Career Practitioner. The Alumni project worker will begin by developing a Transition Plan with the young person, to assist in identifying gaps in support needs, which not only focusses on the student’s future pathway, but also their ongoing supports, financial situation and access to relevant programs.

Some things that Alumni may work on along-side you can include:

  • Enrolling into Further Education and Training
  • Re-engaging in a course
  • Job Searching
  • Transition Plans
  • Referrals to further supports if required

Our Alumni are involved in supporting future students' easier transitions by contributing to regular surveys to let us know what they're up to and what supports have helped. They often contribute reports to the contributors of funds and have come back to tell their stories at functions, presentations and meetings. Some of our alumni assist with developing program delivery (such as a job search drop ins), materials and events. We even have an Alumni interning on our board.

Estelle graduated from the Prahran Young Mums program in 2019 and has been successfully studying a Diploma of Nursing at Box Hill Institute:

Estelle is the epitome of hard work. As a single mum with a child starting school in 2019, Estelle did not slow down her own studies. In fact, she’s taken on a fulltime course load at Box Hill Institute. Once graduating Senior VCAL in mid-2019 Estelle jumped straight into a Diploma of Nursing with full support of her classroom team Tash (youth worker) and Vicki (educator).

I talked to Estelle about her transition from Senior VCAL in our Prahran Young Mums class to studying a Diploma of Nursing and she told me “Transitioning from HHA has been really helpful, I've received financial and social support. I can still go back to HHA and get help with studying and assignments which is really, really good. I wouldn't have been able to afford the diploma without the scholarship, so it's been a great help!”.

Estelle has a study day on Thursday’s, which she spends at the Prahran Campus. I believe this is an inspiration to our current students, as well as continuing to offer Estelle a sense of community. We look forward to continuing to support Estelle’s studies throughout 2020 as she completes her Diploma.
